‘God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference’
– The Serenity Prayer
Inspired by the Serenity Prayer, “The Wisdom To Know the Difference” is an exploration of control on both a creative and a spiritual level. It’s an inquiry into the limits of control. The ease/suffering that arise in clarity/confusion around those limits. The ever-shifting nature of those limits. The responsibility to question what is possible.
This solo project is a confluence of my practices as an improviser and producer, of intuition and intention, of randomization and composition. Using contact mics on each drum in my kit, a headset mic, and SPD SX sampler, and Ableton on my laptop, my vocals and improvisation on the drums are effected, blended with lush textures, and trigger other sonic events at varying degrees of randomness. A song-structured web of intended and unintended sonic consequences emerges; an analogy in sound for the human predicament that the Serenity Prayer illuminates and interrogates.
I’ll be performing WTKTD in Detroit in the Spring and Summer months, and will releasing a single and taking the project on the road for a tour in the Fall of 2018.
Stay tuned for event details!
