The past few months I’ve had the pleasure of working with Sarah Konner and Austin Selden Dance Collaboration – a couple of brilliant movement artists/choreographers – on a site-specific performance inspired by Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The work explores the relationship between the biomechanics of performing bodies and the industrial mechanics of machinery, and interacts with other conceptual facets of the murals as well. For the sonic dimension of the work I’ve composed an original score of vocal music, which will be performed by a dream(y) team of local singers Rachel McIntosh, Torri Lynn Frances, Brendan Asante, and Billy Mark.
This project has been an amazing and humbling opportunity to interact on a deeper level with the murals and their activity as an anchor of Detroit’s creative/cultural/social history. I hope that this performance can inspire curiosity and new inquiries for your relationship with the murals as well!
The work will be performed on Friday May 27th at the Detroit Institute of Arts in Rivera Court – surrounded on all sides by the murals. This is a part of the DIA’s Friday Night Live series – and is totally FREE for residents of Wayne/Macomb/Oakland counties. Performances at 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM. Hope to see you there!
